Leucovorin and Autism. Will it work?

Leucovorin and Autism. Will it work?

Many parents are now learning about the wonders of Leucovorin and the positive impact it may have on some children with autism, specifically on language development.  Leucovorin, which has long been used to treat the toxic effects of methotrexate (a cancer medicine), is now widely being touted by the autism specialists as groundbreaking treatment for treating folate deficiency.

Although certain research says the whole "Leucovorin" theory is a hoax with no reliable scientific backing, many parents are claiming the opposite. Some parents have noticed improvements in not only speech, but behavior as well; including better social skills, better attention and an overall decrease in "autistic" behaviors. Other parents are reporting more irritability along with increased speech.

Of course, you'll have mixed results on the drug because every child's biology is unique. So what determines who will have success on Leucovorin and who will not? According to Dr. Ben Lynch, best-selling author of Dirty Genes and President of Seeking Health, a number of things. In his videos he goes on to explain that many doctors are mistakenly prescribing "high doses" of Leucovorin as a "band-aid" approach in hopes that detox pathways will be forced open, unfortunately resulting in erratic behaviors. He also mentions the importance of cofactors (vitamins that need to be used alongside leucovorin). But many parents aren't given this information and are just plainly being prescribed Leucovorin on its own.

This can explain certain parents reports on their kid's increased agitation and meltdowns while on the drug. Other research suggests the removal of dairy and gluten for optimal results on the drug. Are you considering Leucovorin for your child? Make sure to educate yourself with the latest information and to work along side a qualified doctor.
